Volkswagen is the best selling and original brand of Volkswagen Group based on the shores of Germany. It owns many prominent marques which include; Audi, Buggati, Bentley, SEAT, Skoda, Lamborghini and truck manufacturing company, Scania. The auto-major was founded in the year, 1934 by a German Labor Front named Nazi. The first model of Volkswagen was Beetle, which was design by Ferdinand Porsche on the request of Adolph Hitler. The car was designed in two years time and was named Volkswagen Beetle. The name Volkswagen was derived from a German word which means "Peoples car". Adolph Hitler got a town constructed near the production plant for Volkswagen workers.

Due to consequences of World War II the production of vehicles was delayed. Moreover, lot of damage was caused to the factory due to war and finally, the manufacturing facility was acquired by the British forces. The town near the facility area was renamed as Wolfsburg on the name of Werner Von Schulenberg of Wolfsburg, who surrendered his property for construction of town and factory. In late 1940s, the company started the production of Volkswagen Beetle on large scale.

With the beginning of 50s, Volkswagen increased its product line up and its Beetle became best-selling car due to its amazing aerodynamics and nominal price in the European sub-continental. By 1955, more than 1 million models of Beetle were produced from Wolfsburg facility. In 60s too, the auto-player continued with its success stories due to peaking sales of little wonder car, Beetle.

In 1973, the company introduced its premium saloon Volkswagen Passat series I in U.S. In the same decade the company introduced Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Rabbit. The demand for Golf increased during the '80s as it became the company's most popular model. In the same decade Volkswagen bagged many rally titles with some of its power boosted cars like Volkswagen Motorsport and Volkswagen Golf GTI. In 1982, Volkswagen acquired the Italian car maker, SEAT.

In 1990s, the company had a significant expansion across the globe with acquisition of many dominating car brands. The company acquired the other German car maker, Audi. Moreover, it added the Czech Republic's pride, Skoda Auto in its kitty. Another two big brands which Volkswagen took over during the same decade were the fast track brand Bugatti and the premium leader, Bentley Motors.

With the start of new millennium, Volkswagen increased its product line up by adding some premium cars in its line. Passat fifth generation and Jetta were introduced in 2008. The company also unveiled its premium saloon, Phaeton and SUV Touareg. In India, Volkswagen established itself in 2007 as Volkswagen India Private Limited. It has its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra which has the capacity to manufacture 1,10,000 vehicles per annum.
