In1973, Lamborghini was grabbed in financial crisis due to world financial downturn, oil crisis and bankruptcy. Ferruccio sold 51% stake of Lamborghini to a Swiss investor, Georges Henri-Rossetti. After one year, he sold his stake to another Swiss investor, Rene Liemer. The downtime for Lamborghini continued and the company was again sold to Mimran brothers, in 1980, well known business tycoons in the food industry. During this session many new Urraco models and utiliy vehicles like the Cheetah were introduced.
Lamborghini came in the hands of Chrysler Corporation in 1987. This American company too failed to return the glory of Lamborghini and ultimately, they also sold Lamborghini to Indonesian Interests in 1994. The depression period for Lamborghini continued till 24th July, 1998 when this Italian auto-manufacturer came in the hands of Audi AG, a subsidiary unit of the leading German automobile company, Volkswagen. Audi came as a magic wand to brighten the sales of Lamborghini in the market which increased its overall productivity. The sales of Lamborghini increased rapidly with the beginning of 2000. In the year, 2007 and 2008, Lamborghini recorded the highest number of sales.
Lamborghini cars are assembled at its lineal city, Santagata Bolognese, in which the production of engines and automobiles are done at its single facility. Less than 3000 units are manufactured from this facility in a year. At present, Lamborghini caters two variants of its V-10 engine powered, Lamborghini Gallardo, i.e. its coupe model and roadster model. The other prevailing models Murcielago coupe and roadster were discontinued in 2010 and a new Lamborghini Aventador is speculated to hit markets by the end of this year.
Let us keep our fingers crossed, that the new ownership will brighten the future of this little Italian carmaker. Also it is complimentary, that the Italian car manufacturers have traveled across the long change in ownerships period but they have never compromised with their fast track and powerful products, which they are renowned for.
