Land Rover Freelander 2 – SUV Redefined (Expert Review)

Land Rover, the British luxury marque which is now owned by Tata Motors, has recently unveiled its most affordable model in SUV’s (Sports Utility Vehicle), the Freelander 2 in the Indian auto market. The all new Land Rover Freelander 2 has been launched after the tremendous success of Discovery 4. The 4X4 is expected to boost the company sales with its comparatively less pricing and increased level of technology. BMW is already having a tough time dealing with the increasing popularity of Land Rover SUV’s in the country and now with the Freelander 2, the Tata owned group is likely to turn the table against BMW.

The all new Land Rover Freelander 2 is a frontrunner on both on road as well as in off road conditions. The refreshing Freelander 2 is redefined with distinct changes such as the front grille which looks more prominent than ever. The Boxy machine is sure to enchant Indian buyers first with its looks and comfort level and then by the price tag. The next generation vehicle will be competing with likes of BMW X3, Volvo XC90, Mitsubishi Montero and Audi Q5.

Engine & Specifications

The new Freelander 2 is available in 2 variants; TD4 SE and the SD4 HSE. Both the variants have got added power, performance and fuel economy. The SUV comes with 2179 cc, 4-cylinder, turbocharged, In-line diesel engine that delivers maximum power of 160 bhp at 4000 rpm along with thumping torque of 400 Nm at 2000 rpm. Also, Land Rover Freelander 2 comes with updated six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift.

Exterior

The splashy SUV from Land Rover has got refreshing exterior with sleek lines giving it a more immediate sense of purpose. Engineers have left no stone unturned to make Freelander 2 a class in its own. The clear rectangular headlamps with prominent front grille separate the 4X4 from its predecessor Freelander. The tough bonnet with beautifully carved ‘Land Rover’ written on the front edge enhances the appeal of Freelander 2. The rear end is more or less similar to its sibling. The aggressive alloy wheels along with body coloured bumpers and side mirrors makes Freelander 2 more fascinating then before.

Interior

The muscular Land Rover is bestowed with extremely comfortable interiors which are not expected from an off roader. The inside of the SUV is quiet spacious with enough head and leg room for the passengers. If you are seated on the rear seats of Freelander 2, you will not miss on the things happening around, thanks to higher level of seating arrangement for better view. The upholstery is decent and comes with options of leather, fabric or both combined.

Comfort and Convenience

The second generation Freelander comes with best-in-class comfort level in SUV’s and an array of convenient features. These features comprise of cruise control, the audio system, handsfree telephone operation, standard navigation system, multifunctional switches on steering wheels, AC with dual climate control and power windows. Also, remotely accessible central locking, boot and fuel filler, Rear armrest, rear defogger, electric door mirrors and tinted glass.

Performance

The all new Land Rover Freelander 2 is definitely a high performer with more power and improved fuel economy. Land Rovers patented Terrain response system increases traction across a wide variety of surfaces and in diverse weather conditions through the 4X4’s electronic management systems and traction controls. Safety

The Land Rover Freelander 2 is well equipped with safety features. Advanced stability control system have been kept standard which include Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), and Roll Stability Control (RSC). Apart from this 7-airbags are available for both front seats as well as for rear ones. The innovative knee airbag for driver ensures complete safety of driver.

Mileage

The brawny Freelander 2 offers a mileage of 9.3 kmpl in city and 12.2kmpl on highways.

Price

The speedy SUV is tagged in the price bracket of Rs. 33.80 lakh to Rs. 45 lakh (Ex-showroom New Delhi) depending on which model you opt for from Freelander 2 S, SE and HSE.

Drawback

The baby SUV from Land Rover disappoints on certain aspects. Freelander 2 is only available in diesel version. Land Rover had ample time in the world to launch Freelander 2, so looks could have been improved. Also, low fuel efficiency and high emission are another issue with the 4X4. Rest everything is good, not to forget its high pricing.
