Renault-Nissan Likely to Opt out Of Bajaj’s ULC Car Plan

The Indian vehicle manufacturing company, Bajaj Auto’s ultra low cost (ULC) car plan is likely to turn bit shadowy as a strategic alliance of Renault-Nissan is planning to opt out of the project. Few years back Bajaj planned to bring in an ultra low cost car in India and Nissan and Renault India showed great interest in the plan, but now everything thing seems doubtful as the partnership alliance is not much influenced with what was exhibited at the 11th Delhi Auto Expo 2012 held in January.

Last month at Auto Expo, Bajaj showcased its ULC model RE60 and the same was not greatly appreciated by visitants as well as Renault-Nissan. As a result the two jointly associated firms have not yet responded anything about the ULC project and their interest in the project. Basically, the Franco-Japanese alliance was planning a competitor against Tata Nano and to offer a budget passenger car to customers of India, while on the other hand Bajaj showcased the RE60 as a transport medium, which is an option to auto-rickshaws. And so as the thoughts clashed, as of now the whole ULC car idea is under uncertainty.

With the declaration of ULC car from Bajaj-Nissan-Renault came into the picture, the complete domestic auto market eagerly waited for what’s in store from the automakers and will the new small car be able to offer the customers what Tata Nano could not do. However, at the auto expo, Bajaj announced that the RE60 will be an upgraded form of auto-rickshaw and not a passenger car.

As per specifications, the Bajaj RE60 will be priced at Rs. 1.25 lakh with 200cc water cooled DTSi engine, churning out an impressive power of 19bhp with assured fuel efficiency of around 35kmpl. The model will be available in two variants – commercial and deluxe.
