The German luxury carmaker Mercedes Benz is all geared up to cruise in its ‘Smart’ brand and few compact cars to the Indian auto market and for the same purpose the premium auto brand will carry forwards its plan through Renault’s local operations.
The global alliance between Mercedes-Benz and Renault-Nissan commenced in April 2010 and the same will soon get established in the country as well.
As per industry sources, the new vehicles from Mercedes such as the Smart ‘Fortwo’ and an upcoming model, ‘Forfour’ have been through the feasibility detailing and analysis but there is still time as they are likely to be introduced only by 2014.
Moreover the reports say that the Franco-Japanese automaker’s venture has made an investment of Rs. 4,500 for the entire engine and automobile manufacturing unit at Chennai. And the same plant is supposed to be utilized by the company based next to parent company Daimler’s own truck facility. Also, common parts sourcing and engine development will assist the brand in offering a competitive price tag to the models.
One of the senior officials commented, “India is one of the flourishing countries and the place need to confront some logical strategies. There is a lot of scope and we need to localize in the market. In the foreseeable future, we will come to that part of the world and discuss the possibility of introducing Smart. Being associated with Renault, we are looking for a common platform approach and we would need lower displacement engines. We thought this might be an opportunity to drive through economies of scale with two partners.”
