Maruti Suzuki India, the largest car maker in the country that accounts for more than 50 percent share of the total cars sales in the Indian market, is all set to mark its debut in the MUV (multi utility vehicle) segment by year 2012. The company will roll-out its much anticipated MUV R3 in the country in the first half of year 2012. So far, the company’s operations are limited to the volume driven small and compact car segment. The car is currently under development at Maruti’s R&D center in India. After its launch in the Indian market the R3 model will be taking on the likes of Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo.
The concept version of this Maruti R3 model was displayed at the Delhi International Auto Expo in January where it had attracted a considerable number of auto enthusiasts and visitors. The Maruti R3 concept is basically a six-seater passenger crossover that is being developed at the platform of Maruti SX4. There are three rows in the concept version of this vehicle along with a hinged rear door. The new Maruti MUV is expected to be rolled-out in not only diesel and petrol versions but also in CNG (compressed natural gas) version. The new model is expected to carry a price tag in the range of Rs 7 to 9 lakh.
The new R3 model will enter in the testing phase by the end of this year. The model will first road tested at the Indian roads and than will be developed as per the needs and requirements of the Indian buyers.
Moreover, according to some industry reports, the German car maker Volkswagen (that has more than 19 percent share in Maruti’s Japanese parent Suzuki) is also expected to use the platform of Maruti R3 to develop a new MUV under its brand name.
Besides R3, the other upcoming cars of the company in the Indian market include Maruti Cervo and Maruti Kizashi. The Maruti Cervo is a small car that will be roped-in against the likes of Tata Nano in the price segment of sub Rs 2 Lakh. While the Maruti Kizashi is a premium hatchback that is expected to hit the Indian roads by the end of this year.
