The Indian auto market ruler Maruti Suzuki is all set to create a fresh niche in the MPV segment of the country with its new launch of seven-seater multi- purpose vehicle (MPV) Ertiga. The global unveiling is likely to happen next month in April.
With all new Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki is planning to target the customers who are keen to upgrade from hatchbacks to bigger commercial vehicles instead of going for sedans.
The Managing Executive Officer (marketing) of Maruti Suzuki India, Mr. Mayank Pareek clearly stated that their new MPV Ertiga will not snatch the ruling place of two largest selling MPVs in India, the Bolero from Mahindra and Toyota’s Innova. However, the new Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is positioned between both the two MPVs.
According to auto practice leader, PwC, Mr. Abdul Majeed , “In domestic auto market, small cars will continue to rule but the new MPV from Maruti Suzuki will capture the interest of a large volume category especially by the large families in rural areas.”
Both Bolero and Innova attracts good sales number in the country. The monthly sale of M&M’s Bolero is 8,000 units and the vehicle majorly sells in rural areas. On the other hand, Toyota sells about 5,000 units of Innova every month and the same is more preferred by people opting for a commercial vehicle. The leading carmaker, Maruti is quite sure that the new Ertiga will sell more than the Innova but is not expecting to overtake the success of Bolero in the country.
Mr. Pareek further remarked, “With the launch of Swift in 2005, the company brought a revolution in the premium hatchback segment of India. At the same time we were aiming to sell 2,000 units of the car per month but with overwhelming response, the demand happened to be much more. And now with Ertiga, we are attempting to create a niche category as a city MPV that is easy to drive and park in cramped parking spaces. The Ertiga will definitely have a waiting period even before launch.”
