Indian car enthusiasts would be feasting on the foreign beauties from Renault and Ford in the coming months. Showcased at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo, Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport will be soon seen running on the Indian roads; among which Renault Duster will be launched by this month while Ford EcoSport will see the Indian daylight by this festive season. With lot of hype created let’s take a short comparison between the two compact SUVs on the basis of following factors:-
The French Duster carries dynamic and rugged looks which are the need of the day. Nice steady style with powerful bland headlamps, sporty bumpers, aggressive wheel arches and sporty roof rails all accentuate the performance of this compact sports utility vehicle. Awesome ground clearance of 210 mm and 16 inch alloys help Duster to get past the rough roads. Rear part is also elegantly designed with curvy boot lid, D shaped exciting tail lamps and high mounted stop lamp.
With massive ground clearance of 200 mm, Ford EcoSport has got everything to keep you going irrespective of city hurdles. Boasting fabulous overall appearance, the front fascia of EcoSport has large split – chromed grille similar to the Fiesta model. Vibrant aerodynamic styling presents the compact crossover with terrific fuel saving design. Side mirrors with turn indicators, sporty roof rails, aggressive rear end with ‘X’ kind of looks and on top of it the rear mounted spare wheel all accentuate the masterwork done by the Ford engineers.
Ductile Duster interiors complement its exotic exteriors with all black theme & curvy dashboard which exudes sportiness. Borrowing a lot of cues from Logan sedan, Renault Duster is a five seater and boast of the same chrome trimmed dials having digital display in the centre of the dash as seen in its cousin. Though steering feels a little heavy at turns and gear box is also a little bit stiff but aren’t SUVs bought for some hard work? Spacious interiors have comfortable seats and good boot space which makes it ideal for long touring drives.

Engine, Specifications & Performance:-
Relishing Renault Duster is speculated to be powered by a 1.5 litre CRDi diesel engine which is doing duties under Nissan Micra and will be linked to six speed manual gearbox. The engine would be able to churn maximum power of 110 bhp at 4000 rpm and peak torque of 240 Nm at 1750 rpm whereas the petrol one will be powered by a 1598 cc DOHC engine which is able to generate top power of 105 bhp at 5750 rpm and max torque of 148 Nm at 3750 rpm. Petrol powermill will be mated to five speed manual transmission. Renault Duster will be available in 4×2 option only. Diesel Duster will accelerate from 0-100 kmph in mere 11.8 seconds with a top speed of 164 kmph.
Fantastic Ford EcoSport on the other hand will be powered by a 1.0 litre turbocharged ecoBoost petrol engine which has the capability to take the competition head on with conventional 1.6 litre engine as the ecoBoost motor belts out top power of 120Ps at 6000 rpm and peak torque of 170Nm at 1300-4500 rpm. While a 1.5 litre TDCi Turbo diesel motor squeezes max power 80Ps at 3750 rpm and peak torque of 160Nm at 2000-2750 rpm. It is speculated that the engine would be mated to same regular 6-speed Powershift automatic gearbox or 5-speed gearbox. Petrol EcoSport sprints from 0-100 kmph in 16 seconds at a top speed of 160 kmph whereas diesel version covers the same slot in mere 13.5 seconds with a top speed of 182 kmph.
The ravishing Renault Duster would be packed with an array of features comprising of Power steering, Power windows with switches on door pads, Remote central locking, Remote fuel filler, Rear armrest with cup holder, Electrically adjustable driver’s seat, Leather seat, Tinted glass, Foldable rear seats, 2 Tripmeter, Tachometer, AC with climate control, Remote boot opener, Foldable front passenger seat, Glove box, Rear wiper, Rear defogger, Radio, CD, MP3 player with Bluetooth and AUX input.
The all new Ford EcoSport will be loaded with features like remote operated door opening & closing, Power windows, Tripmeter, My Connection feature in music system, iPod or USB connectivity, Quick fold system for the rear seats, plenty of storage areas like under passenger seat, Cooled glove box, Cup holders, Map holder on front seats, Auto Climatic control AC system with pollen filters, etc. A SYNC feature is also installed in the EcoSport which works on voice recognition commands.
Dashing Duster is speculated to yield fuel efficiency of 17-19 kmpl whereas the Enchanting EcoSport will be delivering impressive fuel economy of around 16 kmpl as claimed by Ford.
Both the vehicles are expected to be tagged in the price range of Rs 7 lakh – Rs 9 lakh (Ex-showroom approximate).
Undoubtedly, the Indian auto market will witness one of the fiercest fights till now among compact SUV market because both these vehicles are one step ahead from each other. We think it would not be wise to rule out anybody as both these machines have got enough capability and have fantastic maneuvering ability in urban traffic. From our side, it’s a tie.
