With the Hyundai i-Gen i20 unleashed last month, the premium hatchback war in the Indian auto market has just intensified. First it was only among Hyundai i20 and Maruti Swift but with Ford Figo coming into play the game has completely changed. And in the mean time, Hyundai launched the refreshed version of i20 which is certain to throttle its sales giving Maruti Swift a kind of stare. Contrarily, the Indian giant Maruti is enjoying the top position in premium hatch segment with its new Swift and the difference between no. 1 and no. 2 position is shrinking with new i20’s entry. The compare also includes new Hyundai i20 diesel vs new Swift diesel. Let’s take a close look on both the cars in terms of following factors:-
Exteriors:-

The all new Hyundai i20 has gone under complete reconstruction with redesigned bumpers, fluidic new headlamps and pleasing tail lamps. Neat and sharp lines enhance the appeal of this elegant Hyundai model. Turn indicators on body colored ORVMs, sporty roof spoiler, shining front grill and smartly designed 8-spoke 15 inch alloys enchant the vehicle with contemporary looks.

The refreshed Swift 2011 is now wider and longer than its predecessor model. The height of the hatchback is also reduced by 20 mm this time. The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift 2011 is bestowed with bigger and better headlamps with peeled back tail lamps. The gorgeous round shaped fog lamps with refined front and rear bumpers are latest addition in the Swift 2011 to increase its charm. New front grille and new wheel cover design are some other plus points of the hatchback.

Interiors:-

Step in the Hyundai i20 cabin and the gleaming blue LED illumination greets you and rest is handled by the comfy ergonomically placed seats which cater you with the taste of luxury. Hyundai i-Gen i20 is joyfully sculpted with an eye on every detailing and signifies the hard work of the Hyundai engineers. Interior features embrace leather & chrome finish gear knob, Clutch footrest, Coat hook, Luggage hook, etc.

The enchanting Swift 2011 has also got redefined interiors with new steering on which the controls for music/ telephone are mounted. The inside is now more spacious thanks to the increased length and width of the hatchback. The seats are comfortable with good amount of leg and shoulder room. The black upholstery is kept similar in the new Maruti Suzuki Swift 2011 model. The instrument cluster is now refreshed with silver and black finishing.

Engine, Specifications & Performance:-

Under the stylish hood of new Hyundai i20 a 1.2-litre VTVT Kappa engine is installed which belts out 84 PS of maximum power at 5200 rpm and 11.4 kgm of peak torque at 4000 rpm. The engine is mated to 5-speed manual transmission. It is also available in an automatic version. Mated with 6-speed manual transmission, the 1.4 litre diesel engine produces top power of 90 Ps at 4000 rpm and terrific torque of 22.4 kgm at 1750-2750 rpm.
The automatic version covers 0-100 kmph slot in mere 15.4 seconds with a top speed of 170 kmph. The 1.2 litre kappa engine variant sprints from 0-100 kmph in just 15.2 seconds with maximum speed of 154 kmph. The diesel version accelerates form 0-100 kmph in fiery 13.2 seconds with a top speed of 166 kmph.

The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift 2011 is blessed with 1298cc, 4 Cylinder, 16 valves petrol engine. This powerful engine is capable of producing maximum power of 87 bhp at 4000 rpm and a peak torque of 113 Nm at 4500 rpm. The 1.3 L Multijet diesel engine from Fiat will be doing the duties in the new Swift as well. This engine offers an impressive power of 75 bhp at 4000 rpm along with generating thumping torque of 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. Both the engines are mated with 5 Manual gears.

The vehicle sprints from 0-100 kmph in just 10 seconds and clocks a maximum speed of 160 kmph.

The refreshed Hyundai i20 embraces Rear Parking Camera, Fully Automatic Temperature Control, Clean Air-Cluster ionizer for fresh air, Supervision Cluster, Smart Key with Push button feature, Steering Mounted Audio and Bluetooth controls, Tilt & telescopic steering, Multi Information Display, 2-DIN CD/MP3 Audio System with 4 speakers and 2 tweeters, USB, Aux-in and Bluetooth connectivity. Other include 60:40 Split Seats, centre console multipurpose storage box, front door map pockets, passenger side seat back pocket, Tachometer, Dual Trip meter, passenger vanity mirror and many more.

The convenient feature list of Maruti Swift comprise of AC with climate control, power windows, rear defogger, dash integrated MP3/FM and rear wiper. Comfortable leather seats with foldable rear seat option, remote central locking, remote boot and remote fuel filler add to the comfort level of the car. Apart from these, adjustable steering, tinted glass, both side electric door mirrors, manually regulated driver seat and steering mounted control contribute to the feature list.

Mileage:-

Hyundai i-Gen i20 automatic delivers an overall mileage of 11kmpl – 15 kmpl while the 1.4 L Kappa engine returns with an overall fuel efficiency of 15-17 kmpl. The diesel i20 offers an impressive mileage of 18 kmpl -23 kmpl.
On the other hand, Maruti Swift delivers an impressive mileage of around 15 Kmpl in city while 18.5 Kmpl on highways and its diesel version returns with figures of 17 Kmpl in city and 20 Kmpl on highways.

Price:-

The fluidic Hyundai i20 is tagged in the price bracket of Rs 4.73 lakh – Rs 7.67 lakh whereas the sizzling Swift is placed in the range of Rs 4.22 lakh – Rs 6.38 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi).
