New Hyundai i20 VS Ford Figo – Close Contest (Expert Review)

The South Korean auto maker Hyundai has bestowed the Indian auto market with its new sizzling Hyundai i20 on 28th March, 2012. With the launching of facelifted version, the sales of the car are expected to further boost up. On the other hand we have Ford Figo, the only hatchback which has made history for the American auto major with its terrific sales and awesome performance. Presently, eying the second spot of the premium hatchback segment behind Maruti Swift, Ford Figo has recently completed its two years in the Indian subcontinent. It would be interesting to see how new hyundai i20 vs ford figo face off on the basis of following factors:-

Exteriors:-
Inspired from its lavish i3, the new Hyundai i20 has gone under complete reconstruction with new stylish bumper, redesigned bumpers, fluidic new headlamps and pleasing tail lamps. Neat and sharp lines enhance the appeal of this elegant Hyundai model. Turn indicators on body colored ORVMs, sporty roof spoiler, shining front grill and smartly designed 8-spoke 15 inch alloys enchant the vehicle with contemporary looks.

Ford’s global ‘kinetic design’ is put to use in the Figo with peeled back head lamps, small grill having Ford’s emblem perfectly tucked in. Figo boasts of low stance car and the rear end is similar to the discontinued Ford Fusion. Body colored bumpers, side mirrors and door handles look stunning in this hatchback. All in all Figo’s design cues manage to impress onlookers.

Interiors:-

Step in and the gleaming blue LED illumination greets you and rest is handled by the comfy ergonomically placed seats which cater you with the taste of luxury. Hyundai i-Gen i20 is joyfully sculpted with an eye on every detailing and it signifies the hard work of the Hyundai engineers. Interior features embrace leather & chrome finish gear knob, Clutch footrest, Coat hook, Luggage hook, etc.

Fantastic Figo boasts of well finished interiors with comfortable front seats and trendier seat fabrics, uplifting Figo’s cabin. However, rear seats have limited leg room and no power windows for the rear passengers. Air conditioner is excellent, cooling the environment in no time. Top variant of Figo is loaded with factory fitted audio music system with Bluetooth facility.

Engine, Specifications & Performance:-

Under the stylish hood of new Hyundai i20 a 1.2-litre VTVT Kappa engine is installed which belts out 84 PS of maximum power at 5200 rpm and 11.4 kgm of peak torque at 4000 rpm. The engine is mated to 5-speed manual transmission. It is also available in an automatic version. Mated with 6-speed manual transmission, the 1.4 litre diesel engine produces top power of 90 Ps at 4000 rpm and terrific torque of 22.4 kgm at 1750-2750 rpm.

The 1.2 litre kappa engine variant sprints from 0-100 kmph in just 15.2 seconds with maximum speed of 154 kmph. The diesel version accelerates form 0-100 kmph in fiery 13.2 seconds with a top speed of 166 kmph. The automatic version covers 0-100 kmph slot in mere 15.4 seconds with a top speed of 170 kmph.

Ford Figo is fitted with 1.2 liter petrol engine churns max power of 71 PS at 6250 rpm along with ultimate torque of 102 Nm at 4000 rpm. Whereas the 1.4 liter Duratorq diesel engine seen in Fiesta, yielding 69 Ps of top power at 4000 rpm and 160 Nm of peak torque at 2000 rpm. The engines are mated to a 5 speed manual transmission.

The fantastic Figo petrol of the hatch covers the same slot in 15.5 seconds with a speed limit up to 170 kmph. The diesel variant sprints from 0 to 100 kmph in 16.2 seconds and has a top speed of 157 kmph.

Figo is loaded with many advance features like Bluetooth phone interface, MP3 player, radio and 4 speakers. The all new Ford Figo has left no stone unturned to fill the car with more and more features which also include power window, electrically adjustable mirror and remote boot opening.

Mileage:-

Happening Hyundai i20 automatic delivers an overall mileage of 11kmpl – 15 kmpl while the 1.4 L Kappa engine returns with an overall fuel efficiency of 15-17 kmpl. The diesel i20 offers an impressive mileage of 18 kmpl -23 kmpl. Far-fetched Ford Figo returns with impressive mileage of 12.5- 14.5 kmpl in city and 15.5- 18.5 kmpl on highways.

Price:-

New Hyundai i20 is tagged in the price bracket of Rs 4.73 lakh – Rs 7.67 lakh while Ford Figo is available in the price bracket of Rs 3.59 lakh – Rs 5.48 lakh (All prices are ex-showroom New Delhi).
